What is a 3D front and backlit sign?
A 3D front and backlit sign — also called a dual-lit sign — is a raised letter or logo illuminated from two directions at once: LEDs behind the face light up the front for sharp daytime and night-time readability, while a second set of LEDs glows out the back, casting a soft halo onto the wall behind it. Standard custom signage only does one or the other. Dual-lit signs do both — which is why they read as the premium option.
- Front-lit only — light shines out through the face, no wall glow. Bright, direct, no halo.
- Halo-lit only — face stays dark, light spills out the back onto the wall. Soft, ambient, no face detail.
- 3D front and backlit (dual-lit) — both effects combined: bright legible face and a halo glow behind it
- Fully illuminated — light diffuses through the entire acrylic body, face and sides. A different effect again.

Frequently asked questions
Front-lit signs illuminate only from the face. Backlit (halo) signs only glow from behind. 3D front and backlit signs combine both for the highest visibility and dimension.
Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of dual-lit (front and backlit) signs. The front face usually uses translucent acrylic (or similar) that can be coloured with vinyl, paint, or tinted acrylic, while the rear halo uses a separate set of LED modules.
Prices are highly custom and vary widely. Expect dual-lit signs to sit at the premium end of illuminated channel letters because they require a double-depth structure, two lighting systems, and more complex fabrication. (see our pricing section)
Typically it takes 1 to 15 days to completely build these signs.
We offically provide 02 years warranty on our signs but we do not accept return as we confirm order before processing.
Yes, when properly specified and fabricated for exterior conditions.
Quality dual-lit channel letters are routinely used on Australian shopfronts, façades, and commercial buildings. Key outdoor features include:
- Weatherproof sealing (IP65 rating common)
- UV-stable acrylic and finishes that resist fading and yellowing
- Corrosion-resistant metals (aluminium or 316 stainless steel recommended for coastal areas)
- Waterproof LED modules and drivers rated for temperature extremes and moisture
