THE BASIC

What counts as a metal building sign?

Metal building signs are any metal signs mounted to the structure itself — a facade, entry wall, awning fascia or workshop roller-door surround — rather than sitting on a pylon or in a window. Because they carry your name on the architecture, signs for builds like these are cut from aluminium, stainless, corten or brass that hold their edge through weather, sun and washdowns, which is why metal signs for building exteriors typically outlast printed or acrylic alternatives by a decade or more.

Most metals signs we build for facades and sheds fall into one of four families. Which one is right depends on your cladding, viewing distance and whether the sign needs to read after dark:

  • 3D metal letters — laser-cut aluminium, stainless or brass with real depth; the classic corporate facade look
  • Halo-lit (reverse) channel letters — LEDs glow backward against the wall for a floating premium effect
  • Open-face channel letters — exposed LED or neon-flex inside metal returns, the vintage bar and diner style
  • Trimless channel letters — seamless faces with no visible trim cap, the modern flagship finish

SIGN TYPES

Custom metal signs for building exteriors

Every metal sign we build starts with the same question: how far away will people see it, and in what light? Here's what each option actually means for cost, durability and where it works best.

Laser-cut aluminium, stainless or brass letters with real depth, stud-mounted to your facade. Non-illuminated, so no wiring — the professional pick for offices and showrooms.

Any colour, matched to your brand, baked onto aluminium for a hard UV-stable skin. The workhorse finish for metal signs for building exteriors and workshop signs.

High visibility

Brushed & polished

Raw stainless, brass or aluminium with a brushed or mirror face. No paint to fade — the metal itself is the finish, ideal for corporate entries.

Premium finish

Corten / patina

Weathering steel that rusts to a rich, stable orange-brown and then stops. Zero maintenance, huge character, perfect for architectural builds.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

How much do metal building signs cost?

Most metal building signs run $1,600–$3,800 depending on size, metal and lighting. Small non-illuminated metal letters start around $650, and full facade fit-outs with mixed metals from $4,200. You’ll get an itemised fixed quote with your free mockup.

How long does production take?

Most metal signs take 7–14 business days from artwork approval. Corten and brass jobs can add a few days for finishing. We’ll confirm a firm date with your quote.

What's the warranty?

Every sign carries a 2-year workmanship warranty covering fabrication, finish and LED components under normal use.

How long does production take?

Most channel letter orders take 10–18 business days from mockup approval, since each letter is individually fabricated, wired and sealed. Full fascia packages can take up to 4 weeks. Your fixed quote includes a committed build date.

Which metal should I choose for outdoors?

Powder-coated aluminium is the all-rounder — light, rust-proof, any colour. Stainless and brass suit premium entries. Corten is for statement panels that embrace a rust patina. Your mockup will show your logo in each finish if you’re undecided.

Lit or non-lit — which do I need?

If you trade after dark or your building faces a busy road, halo-lit metal earns its keep. Daytime-only workshops and offices are usually better served by crisp non-illuminated letters at a lower cost.
