THE BASIC

What is a blade sign?

A blade sign — also called a projecting sign — mounts perpendicular to the building rather than flat against it, so it’s visible to foot traffic approaching from either direction along a street. It’s the classic laneway café, bar and barbershop move, and it works especially well on narrow footpaths where a flat wall custom signs might not be seen until someone is already level with the shopfront.

  • → Non-illuminated blade signs — flat-cut metal or acrylic on a bracket, no wiring required
  • → Illuminated blade lightboxes — an internally lit box, visible day and night from both sides
  • → Halo-lit blade signs — LEDs behind a cut logo or letters glow against a backing panel
  • → Round or shaped blade signs — circular or custom-profile signs mounted on a bracket

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

What is a blade sign?
A blade sign (or projecting sign) mounts perpendicular to the building rather than flat against it, so it’s visible to foot traffic approaching from either direction along the street — the classic laneway café or barbershop signage style.
Do blade signs need council approval?
In many areas, yes — projecting signs over a public footpath often need council approval due to clearance height and safety requirements. We can flag likely permit requirements as part of your quote, but always confirm with your local council.
How far does a blade sign project from the wall?

Most blade signs project 40–90cm from the wall or bracket, though this depends on council clearance rules for footpaths and the size of the sign itself.

Can blade signs be illuminated?

Yes — blade signs can be non-illuminated, halo-lit, or built as a fully illuminated lightbox for even day-and-night brightness from both sides.

Are blade signs suitable for laneways and narrow footpaths?

Yes — blade signs are one of the most effective formats for laneways and narrow footpaths specifically because they read from both directions, unlike a flat wall sign that’s only visible face-on.

What's the warranty?

Every sign carries a 2-year workmanship warranty covering LEDs, power supplies, seals and construction.
